Toxicology



It is a branch of science which deals with the study of the adverse effects of chemical substance on living organisms and practice of diagnosing and treating exposures to toxins and toxicants. Toxicology has been defined as the study  of the poisons. PARACELSUS is known as the "Father of Toxicology". He said "Poison is in everything and no thing is without poison. The dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Forensic Toxicology                                                                                                                                  

It is the branch of science that applies the principles and knowledge of toxicology to the issues and problems in the field of law. "Mathew Orfila" is known as "Father of Forensic Toxicology"        Forensic Toxicology is the analysis of biological samples for the presence of toxins, including drugs . It is a multidisciplinary field involving the detection and interpretation o f the presence of drugs and other potentially toxin compounds in bodily tissues and fluids.                                            

Today, the practice of forensic toxicology encompasses three major subdivisions : Postmortem toxicology , forensic drug testing and human performance toxicology . Postmortem toxicology is replete with vivid imagery of intricate homicidal poisonings. The basic responsibility of the forensic toxicologists is assisting the judicial system in deciding whether a particular substance could have a clinical or toxicological impact on the outcome of a legal matter. Forensic drug testing arose primarily as a method of detecting drug use among individuals and as a way to curb or detect contemplated or further use.  Human performance toxicology is concerned with the relationship between the presence of a drug in an individual and changes in behavior or performance on assigned tasks .
